I started the website PSJunkies.com a few years ago simply because I considered myself a Playstation Junkie. I used to be Infatuated with the whole Playstation world. I spent about 4.5 years playing like an addict. All my free time went into playing PS3 games with my new online friends who I also consider real! Friends not just some random people online (Big Difference).
I was pretty deep into it but I came to a problem, I needed a way to make money playing so I could spend more time playing so I bought a somewhat expensive game capture device (Hauppauge HD PVR) and I started uploading gameplay tips and commentary videos but Youtube would decline when I tried to put ads on these video game videos. The game companies own all the rights to the games and it got almost impossible to make any money off video game videos. Sure there are organizations such as Machinima who can help you but i prefer not to go that route.
So With a little guidance from Youtube I turned to making videos which I own the rights to so I can make money from the ad revenue. This has since taken my passion away from gaming and into more creative endeavours. I watched the Playstation 4 announcement last night and I have to admit I was a little unimpressed, Sure the new controller and new social capabilities are a nice touch but as for the games shown, apart from “Watch Dogs” I didn’t see anything groundbreaking. Yes the “Media molecule ” segment was entertaining and made me smile but i couldn’t see me playing such a game.
I guess what I’m getting at is the world we live in today it seems we freely share our photo’s, thoughts and ideas on social networks for free and these networks reap the rewards and make all the money. I noticed a photo I posted on Instagram the other day had 5 ads next to it when it appeared on Facebook so I decided to ONLY show my images on my own gallery with my own ads.

With Sony’s PS4 video streaming options I can see a future of lots of gamers streaming their content to the world and weather or not ads are placed on this videos isn’t important, What is important is the creator of the video won’t be able to make a penny on it. Instead the gamer is expected to go out and earn money at work to spend on entertainment and that is ok for some but not for me. i feel I can see great value in owning rights to sounds, music and video and this is the route I’m taking.
Will i buy a PS4? probably at some point but I would really love to see the gaming industry take the same route as Youtube and allow the gamers to make a little money for themselves for all their hard work and THAT is what I think the truly next generation of gaming should be like. Check out my blog on PSJunkies where I mentioned this ahead of the Playstation2013 meeting.
I still intend to carry on with PSJunkies.com and I’m currently looking for writers to join in making PSJunkies.com a place for Playstation gamers to share their thoughts and videos. My dream is to turn PSJ into a site which in the future can pay gamers for their content but it’s still early days yet and need other to help me with the struggle, If you’re interested in writing for creating content for PSJunkies please Contact me.
Thanks for reading.
