Call me curious George, but whens this CFW coming out?

A few PS3 owners who have not updated to 3.21 to keep the option of having Linux on their PS3′s have been using a Proxy hack to get their 3.15 PS3′s online (myself included) But it looks like Sony have pulled the plug on that and managed to cancel the Proxy hack from allowing PS3′s running system firmware 3.15 and before from connecting to the internet.

So while GeoHot (aka the iphone / PS3 hacker) sorts his taxes out, we have to wait a little longer for the G man to release the custom firmware.

I get the feeling he’s giving sony a chance to rectify the problem before releasing it to the masses.

geohot 3.21 update So….. On the 1st of April sony deployed the update 3.21 for PS3′s which took away the ability to “install other OS” meaning if you update to 3.21 you can no longer install OS’s like linux on your PS3 but if you do not update then you cant go online with your PS3 OS. Which means PS3 owners with the old Phat PS3 had to make a choice. Linux or PS3 on their PS3′s.

GeoHot aka the iphone hacker responsable for sony making this update due to making the fact that he had hacked the PS3 public, has appollogized and claims to be working on a third party Fix CFW (Custom Firmware) for this situation caused by himself.

A note to people interested in the exploit and retaining OtherOS support, DO NOT UPDATE. When 3.21 comes out, I will look into a safe way of updating to retain OtherOS support, perhaps something like Hellcat’s Recovery Flasher. I never intended to touch CFW, but if that’s how you want to play…

Two things, some people seem to think CFW will enable some sort of piracy. It won’t. It’ll just be a custom version of 3.21 that doesn’t lose OtherOS support. Hacking isn’t about getting what you didn’t pay for, it’s about making sure you do get what you did.

And this is about more than this feature right now. It’s about whether these companies have the right to take away advertised features from a product you purchased. Imagine if an exploit were found in Safari on the iPhone, but instead of fixing it, Apple decides to pull web browsing altogether. Legally, they may be within their right to do so, but we have to show them it’s the wrong move for the future of the product and the company.

For now, it looks like proxying the query for new firmwares is working. My investigation into 3.21 has begun.

Switched on

This kid is deffinately switch on in the legal department and i expect he will keep this on the legal side which means no pirated games will play on the PS3′s running CFW but the question is, will he open the door for other CFW writers to make that feature available?

My first thought when he went public on making CFW was, Sony are gonna have him arrested. But after his last blog entry im not so sure.

Also Xbox i think changed the game when they disabled approx 1 million Xbox’s from connecting online for being chipped (allowing them to play pirated games) if someone else makes CFW that runs pirated games on the ps3 i think SONY will most probabley be able to do the same.

The Gaming industry is fast becoming the most popular entertainment. With games like COD MW2 breaking all records and more excellent games coming up for release in the future, theres alot at stake for the console and game company’s.

I guess we will just have to keep waiting to se how this turns out…………….

Firmware 3.21 Update

Looks like your Playstation 3 has a new update coming it’s way on Thursday 1st of April and no April fools jokes here. Thanks to the douche George Hotz who hacked the PS3 a little while back, Sony have retaliated by fixing the exploit he used. Which means all old Phat PS3′s that are able to install linux will no longer have that ability. For those of you who choose to NOT install the 3.21 PS3 System Firmware update to keep linux on your system will no longer be able to connect to the Playstation Network and play games online anymore.

Yeah it sucks, even if you don’t use that “install other OS on your system” feature its a nice little thing to have over the PS3 Slim, but it does make the PS3 system more secure. George Hotz recently apologised for this on his blog

Note!

If you use linux on your PS3 you have a partitioned hard drive right. Well you will need to back up all your linux files if you want to keep them as updating to the new PS3 Firmware will erase all your linux data saved on that partition.

Remember if you have a PS3 Slim then this does not effect you in any way.

Playstation 3 Hacked!

Thats right you read it right. News just in tells me the guy responsable for hacking the iPhone in 2007 at the age of 17 has now turned to the PS3 and he’s done it. George Hotz (cambridge) wrote on his blog that he now has complete read/write access to the Playstation 3 allowing him to make it backwards compatible with PS2 games but he’s still unsure on how to wield his new found power.

It wasnt no easy hack. It took him “3 years, 2 months, 11 days…thats a pretty secure system” He goes on to say he’s not going to make some easy to use download tool so everyone can jump on the bandwagon. As far as i can see its still in the early stages of infancy and im sure will be quite a while before we start seeing mod’d PS3′s all over the place.

Is this the end?

Does this mean PS3′s can me moddified and we can get cheap games meaning you end up with every game that ever comes out but you dont play them as they have no real value and Great games dont get released as no one buys them anymore?

Does this mean Trophies will be able to be hacked meaning all that hard work you’ve done was a waste of time as cheats will use 3rd party programs to get every trophy ever created and even ones that dont exist?

I hope not. As expensive as games are these days you have to remember its big business to the game companies which in turn means they put their all! into the creation process. If that money isnt there why would they continue. Or will Sony follow in the footsteps of Microsoft and end up banning over a million gamers from using their Playstation because their PS3 has been mod’d.

I guess we will just have to wait and see how this story unfolds. Watch this space.
