Killzone 3 3D Beta

One of the best experiences I took home with me from the BetaRooms event has to be playing Killzone 3 in 3D.WOW! and I mean a HUGE WOW. Throughout the whole afternoon KZ3 3D had the longest line out of all the games on offer and I’d think to my self if i wait in that huge line im gonna be missing out on valuable play time as the event only lasts 4 hours but the long wait in the line has to be endured, it just has to. So after we worked our way around the room playing everything  we wanted to try  me and Damopointy finally took the plunge and joined the long line of people waiting to play on one of the two KZ3 3D stations. Luckily for us they opened up a near by practise station for MotorStorm so people waiting for KZ3 3D could at least use the time stood in line to get a lil practise for the MotorStorm 3D TV competition (SCORE!).

The KZ3 3D stations consist of 1 controller, a seat for two and two pairs of 3D specs and as we got towards the end of the Queue there happened to be a lone gamer who was asking if anyone in the queue wanted to check it out using the spare pair of specs as he was alone, no one took him up on his offer so I jumped up there just to see how it looked. I stood behind the polite gamer and put on the spare 3D specs while the loading image filled the screen waiting in anticipation. Then the game started and I even said out loud “Oh my god” after seeing it for about 10 seconds i looked down the line at Damopointy and said “You gotta see this!”, we switched places and all I could do was smile as I watched Damo’s eyebrows raise up while watching through the 3D specs.

No photo’s or video was allowed in this area so i can’tshow you any pic’s or vid’s but i think the video below should give you some idea of the kind of experience you get when you play Killzone 3 in 3D

When i first saw this video (above) I thought hmm, I wonder how much he got paid to over act like that but having actually played this game in 3D I can understand his reactions. As im sure you’ve heard before when it comes to 3D it really is just something you have to see with your own eyes. I’ve tried to create a picture to emulate how 3D looks but it’s just impossible so ill try to explain just some! of what i saw.

Before I start i have to tell you that what I played was a Pre-Alpha version of Killzone3 3D so I’am sure there will be quite a few changes made to polish up the game before its 2011 release.

The demo started and straight away you notice the level of depth in the game. Your gun is in the foreground slightly blurry and everything at distance looks like it’s set in the back of the TV (even though its a flat screen you have to imagine its the size of an old tube TV its like there’s a whole world in there) As the enemies come to attack you you retaliate with fire trying you’re best to hit them but with multiple Helghast firing at you its kind of hard to concentrate and really is very immersive. The Close up melee attacks are pretty sick too which makes you really try to get up close to the enemy just to see how many different melee attacks the game has.

When I reached the area of the demo which lets you throw on the jet pack it took me a few minutes to figure it out and I was expecting to be able to just fly around for the rest of the level, but was brought back to earth when I figured out you can only fly with short bursts of rockets allowing you to hop from platform to platform. I have to admit it was a bit of a let down for me as it doesn’t give the freedom I expected. This let down aside it still feels like a great game with much improved gun handling which feels like KZ2 but much better and flowing.

In short this really is an experience every gamer must try for them selves. Even though the graphics on the KZ3 3D Pre-Alpha where blurry and at times hard to see  its a Pre-Alpha, it ain’t even in beta phase yet so there’s lots of polishing and perfecting to be done. Either way Killzone 3 looks set to raise the bar once again and weather you play KZ3 in 3D or standard HD I’am 100% sure it will be a great game enjoyed by all who go out and buy it.

The only concern I have with 3D gaming is how long can I comfortably play wearing 3D glasses before i start to get eye strain. I personally can play for sometimes 26 hours none stop and I don’t think my eyes will be able to handle it but I will only be able to find out when I own a 3D TV for myself. Note to 3D TV makers: If you’re looking for someone to undertake this task all you have to do is send me a 3D TV I will happily give my eyes a stress test to see if any damage occurs ;D

Gran Turismo 5 Beta

The BetaRooms event in Birmingham last weekend was the event which finally gave me the chance to get my hands on the beta version of the game that is the reason I bought a PlayStation3 about 3 years ago. The anticipation of actually being one of the people I usually see at events like E3 and TGS playing GT5 kept me awake most of the night before the event. I think I managed to get about 4 hours sleep, I just couldn’t stop thinking about it.

The whole journey there I was looking around at the other people going about their day thinking, is that person a gamer? does he/she know about BetaRooms? if so I wonder what he/she would do to be as lucky as me right now?

As i got off one train to wait for the next one I managed to fit in 20 mins of GT PSP, well i gotta get my car collection up right? Then it was on to the next train and in just 45 more minutes I would be sitting in front of a 3D TV playing Gran Turismo 5.

When i arrived it was so great to be in line for this event, just looking at the other 200+ PS3 gamers was a great feeling. Then the doors opened and we started on our way in, This is it! Without delay i made my way straight over to GT5 3D to give it a spin.

I took a seat and put on my 3D spec’s and took the SLS AMG for a spin on the Nurburgring…..   I’am afraid to say i was not too impressed. While I looked at the outside of the car in rear view  so i  could check out how the car looked, i noticed a few scuff’s and scratches on the SLS, which was my first taste of damage in a Gran Turismo game and that was cool but it was the fact the 3D didn’t really POP!. It seemed to be when i watched the screen without the 3D spec’s it looked ever so slightly blurry. Then when you put the spec’s on it pretty much just looks like normal HD. Don’t get me wrong it did look fantastic but i was hoping for a better 3D experience from GT5. I was expecting the inside of the car to “wrap around me”  when in cockpit mode but i got nothing close. However I can’t stress this enough, This is not the finished product. On my very first lap with this GT5 beta the track disappeared completely which assures me many fixes and updates will be applied in the final product.

A little while later while talking to one of the staff from the BetaRooms he was telling me how they couldn’t seem to set it up properly  and that there are some 3D configuration settings which should make it look like it’s supposed to. I asked if i could have a fiddle with the settings but then thought it would be unfair as there was a limited amount of time for everyone to get a try of everything. So I now await the release on November 2nd for GT5 to just come out and show the world all the cool features they’ve been keeping secret for so long.

Think about it! do you really think Polyphony Digital would release a game in 3D and have it not be the Best experience out there to date? I have massive faith in this game and i KNOW they will deliver THE! game of the decade.

Throughout the rest of my time at the BetaRooms I tried a few different cars on different tracks just to check out some stuff and one of the things i wanted to do was smash up a NASCAR. I remember Kazunori Yamauchi saying the NSACAR will break into a 1000  pieces, so i decided to test it out on this E3 beta demo version of GT5.

First of all the car seemed to feel pretty heavy in its handling. It seemed to really just want to go in a straight line with a lot of power but still manages to turn. I think (sounds obvious I know) it will be great for long tracks with long straights but if you need to whip this whip round lots of little tight corners, you’re gonna have a hard time. As for the damage, well it’s not that easy to demolish a car in the short amount of time the demo gives you but i tried my best. The point’s of impact seemed to crumple, exposing both front tires but I didn’t notice any pieces flying off the car really which brings me to thinking the finished product will have a whole new level of detail. But don’t mark my words as this is only me giving my impressions and thoughts. The only way to really know what’s going to happen is to play the game when it comes out.

Don’t worry people’s. GT5 WILL be the greatest racing game you have ever played and the 3D will be just as good.

Also i have more video of GT5 from the BetaRooms event which i will publish in a later post.

3D Revolution

Wanna know about 3D TV’s?

robgroove.com 3dWith 3D technology set to make its entrance into our bedrooms and living rooms later on this summer (2010) i thought i better have a look into what exactly will be needed to enjoy this new experience. Sony have announced the Playstation already has the technology to run 3D.

How does it work?

We’ve all seen 3D has been around for quite a while but as our technology in the home gets more and more powerfull we get the ability to do cooler and cooler things like 3D. The old way was to use a red and blue lense or gel over each eye allowing you to see 2 different pictures displayed on one screen.  The new way is pretty much using the same principals. A Tv throws out 2 x 120Hz images (120HZ = 12 frames per second)   120 Hz to your left eye and 120 Hz to your right eye then you use the HD 3D glasses  which have a shutter system that  recieves a signal from the tv telling them when to close the left eye and when to close the right eye and they do this at 120 Hz or 120 frames per second so your eyes don’t register the flicker of the glasses shutter system.

3d set upWhat do you need?

  • ★ PS3 (already HDMI 1.3 compatible when the firmware upgrade is released later in the summer 2010)
  • ★ 3D enabled TV supporting HDMI 1.4
  • ★ Active Shutter glasses aka HD 3D specs (you should get 1 free pair with your 3D TV)

HDMI 1.4?

hdmi 1.4HDMI 1.3 compatible with HDMI 1.4 i hear you ask?

Even though Sony have announced the PS3 already has the technology to handle this new 3D system there is room for a slight improvement as the PS3′s Hdmi port is only 1.3 and the new 3D TV’s will be 1.4,

The HDMI 1.4 cable will have the ablity to stream 1080-p stereo (thats 2 x 1080P video streams) while the PS3′s HDMI 1.3 will only be able  to handle 1080-i stereo. For those who do not know the difference, 1080-i is kind of an upscaled 720-p still amazing to look at but its not the best which is 1080-p although the average person whill not really be able to tell the difference and shouldnt worry you.

Is it worth it?

Well not having experienced HD 3D for myself yet i can not really say but i have seen a 3D movie in HD but using the old skool (red and blue spec) way and i found myself looking for the 3D, as the colours are all wierd your constantly concious your watching a 3D movie and it takes away from what your actually watching, if you get the jist. I do believe the new shutter system with a HD image should allow you to relax and just enjoy what your watching as it will look and feel completley natural. I don’t think its going to be worth forking out a suitcase full of cash for it but when it becomes reasonabley priced i think it will be a Great! new way to view your favourite entertainment.

My First 3D experience

Final Destination 3D BlurayFree Spec’s

I was walking round Tesco the other day and as i was going through the movie section i noticed Final Destination 3-D. Picked it up, had a little look and saw it was in 3d and includes the 3D glasses with the movie. As i have never seen one of these movies (as old as this one red lens one blue lens technology is) i thought why not. It cost me £17.99 as its a Blu-Ray thought i can always sell it if. So i bought it.

Pop Out

I sat down and started to watch it and its a bit wierd at first. I spent the first half an hour waiting to see hands jumping out of the screen but its not what i saw. If you too have never seen one of these movies and like me are excited about the whole new generation of 3-D technology coming our way later on this year i would recommend you try it out. You dont see things popping out of the screen but its more like you can see there’s distence between objects in the foreground and background. The best scene in the movie is one wherethe camera is above a table looking directly down as someone pops a champagne cork, It will make you flinch. Another great scene where the 3D element really makes a difference is when they’re talking to a mechanic through a fence, the fence really pops out its cool.

Red n Blu

final destination 3d glasses / specsThe red and Blue glasses take a  little while to get used to but when you take them off after a while things get even stranger lol, Just for a few seconds till your eyes adjust. However watching this movie i can see exactly how the NEW 3D technology (used in AVATAR)  will look. Exactly like this but sharper, and everything in the correct color. Im still very excited but its not exactly as good as i thought it would be. I think 3-D will be a part of the future though and not just a passing fad. Would i recommend  buying this movie? Well, Yes i would. If you haven’t seen a 3D movie before and are interested then give it a shot. If you already saw AVATAR in tru 3D i prolly wouldn’t bother.
