Wanna know about 3D TV’s?

robgroove.com 3dWith 3D technology set to make its entrance into our bedrooms and living rooms later on this summer (2010) i thought i better have a look into what exactly will be needed to enjoy this new experience. Sony have announced the Playstation already has the technology to run 3D.

How does it work?

We’ve all seen 3D has been around for quite a while but as our technology in the home gets more and more powerfull we get the ability to do cooler and cooler things like 3D. The old way was to use a red and blue lense or gel over each eye allowing you to see 2 different pictures displayed on one screen.  The new way is pretty much using the same principals. A Tv throws out 2 x 120Hz images (120HZ = 12 frames per second)   120 Hz to your left eye and 120 Hz to your right eye then you use the HD 3D glasses  which have a shutter system that  recieves a signal from the tv telling them when to close the left eye and when to close the right eye and they do this at 120 Hz or 120 frames per second so your eyes don’t register the flicker of the glasses shutter system.

3d set upWhat do you need?

  • ★ PS3 (already HDMI 1.3 compatible when the firmware upgrade is released later in the summer 2010)
  • ★ 3D enabled TV supporting HDMI 1.4
  • ★ Active Shutter glasses aka HD 3D specs (you should get 1 free pair with your 3D TV)

HDMI 1.4?

hdmi 1.4HDMI 1.3 compatible with HDMI 1.4 i hear you ask?

Even though Sony have announced the PS3 already has the technology to handle this new 3D system there is room for a slight improvement as the PS3′s Hdmi port is only 1.3 and the new 3D TV’s will be 1.4,

The HDMI 1.4 cable will have the ablity to stream 1080-p stereo (thats 2 x 1080P video streams) while the PS3′s HDMI 1.3 will only be able  to handle 1080-i stereo. For those who do not know the difference, 1080-i is kind of an upscaled 720-p still amazing to look at but its not the best which is 1080-p although the average person whill not really be able to tell the difference and shouldnt worry you.

Is it worth it?

Well not having experienced HD 3D for myself yet i can not really say but i have seen a 3D movie in HD but using the old skool (red and blue spec) way and i found myself looking for the 3D, as the colours are all wierd your constantly concious your watching a 3D movie and it takes away from what your actually watching, if you get the jist. I do believe the new shutter system with a HD image should allow you to relax and just enjoy what your watching as it will look and feel completley natural. I don’t think its going to be worth forking out a suitcase full of cash for it but when it becomes reasonabley priced i think it will be a Great! new way to view your favourite entertainment.
